I actually stumbled into Château Gheude almost by accident on a rainy afternoon, and it ended up being the highlight of my trip to the south coast. The building itself is stunning - that old French colonial architecture with the wide verandas and timber shutters - but what really got me was the scale. It's not a massive museum. You can see everything in about an hour, maybe two if you read every label.

The ship model collection caught me off guard. They have these incredibly detailed replicas of vessels that sailed the Indian Ocean trade routes, including the one that carried the first French settlers to Mauritius. I stood there way too long trying to imagine what that voyage must have been like. The exhibit on the Battle of Grand Port is also worth a good look. That's the Napoleonic-era naval battle where the French actually defeated the British. The museum sits right near the bay where it all happened, which makes the history feel more real somehow.

One practical tip - bring cash. The entrance fee was very reasonable (I think around 200 rupees, maybe less) but they didn't take cards when I went. Also, the woman working the front desk was incredibly knowledgeable. Ask her about the old maps in the back room. She told me stories about the original sugar plantation that the museum doesn't display.

If you're combining it with other south coast stops, it's a solid midday break between the beach and the nature reserves. Not touristy at all. I had the place almost to myself.
