The Senior Special Assistant (SSA) on Transport and Energy to Hon. Salisu Muktari has paid a familiarization visit to the National Commercial Tricycle and Motorcycle Owners and Riders Association of Nigeria (NACTOMORAS), Potiskum Local Government Area Chapter, in furtherance of efforts to strengthen road safety, traffic discipline, and organized transport operations within Potiskum.
During the engagement, the SSA appealed to the leadership of the association to intensify monitoring of members with particular focus on road traffic maintenance, strict compliance with safety rules, and the elimination of underage tricycle and motorcycle riding.
He described the involvement of minors in commercial riding as a dangerous practice that continues to contribute to accidents, injuries, and loss of lives across Potiskum communities.
The SSA also raised concern over the growing trend of reckless riding during social gatherings, especially wedding ceremonies, noting that excessive speeding, careless driving, and road obstruction during celebrations often result in avoidable tragedies, and further urged the association to sensitize its members on the dangers associated with wrong and indiscriminate parking, which disrupts traffic flow and poses serious risks to other road users.
He explained that the visit and ongoing engagements with transport unions are part of broader initiatives aligned with the transport transformation agenda of His Excellency, the Executive Governor of Yobe State, Hon. Dr. Mai Mala Buni, CON, and the Executive Chairman of Potiskum LGA, Hon. Salisu Muktari, aimed at creating a safer, more organized, and efficient transport system across Yobe State, with special emphasis on Potiskum.
The visit was conducted under the platform of Hon. Salisu Muktari’s SSA Forum, chaired by the SSA on Transport and Energy. He was accompanied by members of the Forum, including Hon. Sale Shuddi, SSA on Livestock Development; Hon. Ibrahim Iliyasu, SSA on Water Resources; Hon. Habu Maina Jiji, SSA on Rural Integrated Development; and Mal. Ibrahim M. Nura, Special Assistant on Information and Communication.
In his response, the Chairman of NACTOMORAS commended Hon. Salisu Muktari for establishing the office of SSA on Transport and Energy to address transportation challenges in the local government.
He also reaffirmed the association’s position that underage tricycle and motorcycle riding is strictly prohibited, adding that firm sanctions have been put in place for any member found allowing a minor to operate their tricycle or motorcycle.
The Chairman further assured that the association would implement all necessary measures to address the concerns raised, including sustained sensitisation of members, enforcement of internal regulations, and collaboration with relevant authorities to ensure safer, more orderly roads across Potiskum LGA.
