The Executive Chairman of Potiskum Local Government Area, Hon. Salisu Muktari, on Tuesday paid an official visit to the Potiskum branch of the Yola Electricity Distribution Company (YEDC/NEPA) to formally demand improved electricity supply to the local government area.
The visit was part of the chairman’s efforts to engage directly with service providers over the persistent power shortages being experienced in Potiskum, despite its expanding population, vibrant commercial activities, and strategic importance within Yobe State.
During the meeting, Hon. Muktari expressed deep concern over the adverse effects of irregular electricity supply on small and medium-scale businesses, healthcare delivery, educational activities, and the general socio-economic wellbeing of residents. He stressed that reliable power supply is critical to development and improved quality of life.
Speaking after the engagement, the council chairman described the discussion with YEDC officials as open and productive.
“We visited the YEDC office to formally inquire and seek clear explanations on why Potiskum Local Government continues to experience inadequate electricity supply,” Hon. Muktari said. “The people of Potiskum deserve better. Electricity is not a privilege; it is a basic necessity for economic growth, security, and social stability.”
He disclosed that YEDC management attributed the situation to certain technical and operational challenges, while assuring the local government of renewed commitment to improving power distribution in the area.
“We have been assured that concrete steps will be taken to address these challenges and enhance electricity supply to Potiskum,” he added. “As a local government, we will continue to engage all relevant stakeholders and follow up on these commitments to ensure that the interests of our people are protected.”
Hon. Muktari reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to proactive governance, accountability, and people-oriented leadership, noting that the visit reflects the resolve of the Potiskum LGA leadership to confront challenges affecting residents through dialogue and institutional engagement.
The intervention has been widely welcomed by residents and stakeholders, who view the visit as a strong demonstration of responsive leadership and sustained advocacy for improved public service delivery in Potiskum.
