As Nigeria joins the global community to commemorate World Press Freedom Day, the Executive Chairman of Potiskum LGA, Hon. Salisu Muktari, has commended journalists and media practitioners for their significant contributions to democratic development, while praising Governor Mai Mala Buni for his consistent support to the media.
In a statement marking the occasion, Hon. Salisu Muktari described journalists and media practitioners as indispensable partners in governance, noting that their role in promoting transparency, accountability, and public awareness continues to strengthen Nigeria’s democracy.
He specifically acknowledged Gov. Buni’s commitment to creating a conducive environment for media practice in Yobe State, stressing that such support has enhanced professionalism and encouraged responsible journalism.
Hon. Salisu Muktari aligned his remarks with the position of the National Human Rights Commission, led by Tony Ojukwu, emphasizing that democracy can only thrive where journalists are allowed to operate freely and responsibly.
According to him, the media continues to perform a vital watchdog function by monitoring governance and bringing important issues to public attention, thereby reinforcing accountability and institutional integrity.
He further highlighted the media’s role in empowering citizens through access to credible information, enabling Nigerians to understand policies, engage in national discourse, and participate meaningfully in governance an effort that aligns with Section 39 of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
Describing the media as a bridge between the government and the people, Hon. Salisu Muktari noted that journalists help communicate policies clearly while also amplifying the voices of citizens, promoting inclusiveness and strengthening democratic participation.
He concluded by reaffirming that sustained support for journalists and media practitioners, as demonstrated by Gov. Buni, remains essential for the continued growth of democracy and effective governance in Nigeria.
