From my closet
The abundance of expressions
I choose to be who I want to be
I choose the way I respond to issues
To be happy, of course is easy
I can’t afford to be the real me always

I can’t allow the frown to crown my day
Let the tears remain under the blinds
Let me be the lead and you the fool
As I go I squeeze the smile I got
From my closet

short poem by Esther (Adedeji) Aderiyike Sokomba titled "From my closet". It’s about self-control, identity, and choosing how to present yourself to the world. Short Summary – The poem is a personal reflection on masking emotions and choosing a role in life. The speaker talks about the “abundance of expressions” they have, but choose to control which ones to show. Key ideas: 1. Choice and Control: The speaker emphasizes personal agency – “I choose to be who I want to be” and “I choose the way I respond to issues.” Despite having many emotions, they decide how to act and react. 2. *Hiding the Real Self*: They admit, “I can’t afford to be the real me always.” This suggests that being fully open or vulnerable isn’t always safe or practical. So they hide sadness and pain “under the blinds” and avoid letting a “frown crown my day.” 3. Playing a Role: The line “Let me be the lead and you the fool” shows the speaker deciding to be in control and appear strong, even if it means others don’t see the full picture. The smile they show is something they “squeeze out” – it’s not always natural, but chosen. 4. “From my closet”: The title and repeated line suggest that true feelings are kept hidden, stored away like things in a closet. What the world sees is curated and deliberate. Tone & Theme: The tone is defiant yet weary. It’s about resilience – choosing happiness and strength on the surface – but it also hints at the cost of hiding one’s true emotions. The theme is about identity, emotional labor, and the pressure to appear okay. In short: The poem is about choosing to wear a mask of happiness and control, even when the real self feels different, because that’s what the speaker decides is best for them at that moment.
