The Christian Association of Nigeria, CAN, has declared Sunday, June 14, 2026, as black Sunday to mourn victims of terrorist attacks across the country.
The Association also said there will be national prayer from June 12 to 14.
Speaking at the end of its National Church Denominational Leadership Summit 2026, Chairman of the Association, Daniel Okoh, said prayers are not enough to tackle the security situation in the country, pointing out the need for concrete actions to tackle the menace.
“CAN further designates Sunday, June 14, 2026, as ‘Black Sunday’ across churches in Nigeria in honour of victims of violence and in solidarity with families affected by insecurity,” the communique stated.
He urged the Federal government to declare a state of emergency on insecurity to bring an end to it and called for the unconditional release of kidnapped victims in the country with justice implemented.
“CAN condemns in the strongest terms the barbaric acts of murder, beheading, torture, rape, abduction and forced displacement being perpetrated against innocent citizens, and calls on the Federal Government to declare a state of emergency on security across the country,” the communiqué stated.
Okoh also called for the acceleration of state police and decentralisation of security apparatus to bring quick solutions to it.
“CAN notes with concern the apparent inadequacy of intelligence gathering and coordination mechanisms and criticises recurring resort to conciliatory and pacifist rhetoric by senior government officials in response to grave security threats.
“CAN urges a more decisive, proactive and results-oriented approach to national security,” it added.
