PDP Zones 2027 Presidential Ticket to South as Political Heavyweights Brace for Showdown

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has officially announced its 2027 presidential ticket for the southern region of Nigeria, a move that has already changed the political landscape of the country ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The move, announced by the party leaders, gives the South-South, South-East, and South-West zones the right to field candidates. The development could pave the way for the return of former President Goodluck Jonathan, who is widely expected to carry the flag.

Political observers say the move has created a heated contest between key figures such as Pres. Bola Ahmed Tinubu (APC), Atiku Abubakar (ADC), Peter Obi (Labour Party/LP), and Jonathan, if he accepts the PDP’s invitation to contest.

Southern Vote Split

With Tinubu already confirmed as the APC candidate, the South could see three main candidates—Tinubu, Jonathan, and Obi—all vying for the same position. Analysts have warned that this split could weaken the southern electoral strength of the country, allowing the northern candidate to emerge victorious.

Northern Regions

In the North, former Vice President Atiku Abubakar is leading under the ADC. Despite the challenges, Atiku is seen as the only major northerner with a chance of securing the northern vote. However, his bid is facing resistance from Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso of the NNPP, who commands his supporters in Kano and beyond.

Sources indicate that Kwankwaso could emerge as the likely vice presidential candidate in the PDP-Jonathan alliance, further complicating the opposition’s position.

APC Challenge

The ruling APC, meanwhile, is struggling with internal divisions and suspicions of secession from the North. Analysts have warned that if the party fails to resolve its internal conflicts, Atiku and the ADC could win 75% of the northern vote, posing a major challenge to Tinubu’s bid for re-election.

A Probable Time

Political analysts see the PDP’s move as a harbinger of the 2027 elections in Nigeria. While it strengthens the Southerners’ claim, it could further exacerbate divisions among Southern politicians. On the North side, the move could either boost Atiku’s confidence or create opportunities for new alliances.

As the 2027 elections draw nearer, the outcome could come down to whether political elites in the two regions can come together on a common cause or whether divisions will reshape the future of Nigeria’s democracy.

The PDP move is intriguing, but I'm cautious about the South potentially overshadowing the North. The political landscape seems fragile with too many players vying for power. Let's hope for unity and a stable future.
