Incense from the sanctuary
rose in mingle with the morning sun.
It's been a thousand years since the
preachers of righteous acts destroyed my village.
Memories of before cling to our mind tenacious,
for we were fervent told to wipe all thoughts
of previous yesterday from our slate.
They came in iron wheels on four legs,
demarcating the line between woman and man,
desecrating our worship places.
To whom belong the glory, I wonder.
Mothers bled tears for children borne away
to scrouge the earth for nonexistent metals.
Womanhood wore a garment of shame
while men watched in hopeless disbelief.
Life as we knew it was seized by the throat
and dashed on stone like the inward parts
of infants' medula oblongata.
The world watched in bewildered silence
when we died.
And our persecutors blessed their deeds in
God's holy name.
