Timkat, also known as Timket, is a major Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church celebration of Epiphany. It commemorates the baptism of Jesus Christ in the River Jordan. This vibrant festival is celebrated annually on January 19th (or 20th in a leap year).
The most iconic part of Timkat is the ritual reenactment of Jesus' baptism. This involves processions, chanting, and the blessing of holy waters. Tabots, replicas of the Ark of the Covenant, are carried in a grand procession to a nearby river or pool.
Following the blessing, people, particularly young boys, symbolically participate in mass baptism by immersing themselves in the holy water. Timkat is a deeply spiritual and culturally significant event for Ethiopians. It offers a unique opportunity to witness a blend of religious tradition, cultural expression, and community celebration.
