DAY 7: FAVORITE BOOK

I recommend Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, a third-generation African novelist, that employs a descriptive, personal writing style, which makes her books unique. She’s proven herself over the course five books, and a lot of short stories, as one of Africa’s greatest contemporary writers. She is the author of the award-winning novels Purple Hibiscus (2003), Half of a yellow sun (2006) and Americanah (2013). Her other works include the book essays on feminism and a memoir tribute to her father, Notes on Grief (2021); and a children's book, Mama's Sleeping Scarf (2023). Presently she will be releasing her first novel in 10 years, titled “Dream Count,” on March, 2025. The countless awards, honorary doctorates, magazine covers and more have further established that Adichie is a colossal figure in the African literary space.
I'd say that my favorite book is Half of a yellow sun (2006). It's a story about the toll the Biafran War (6 July 196 to 15 January 1970) took on the Nigerian and Biafran people. The Biafran War resulted from tension between the policies of the Nigerian federal government and native nationalist aspirations to self-determine. In that novel, Adiche makes her characters present and alive. Adichie doesn’t create characters for the sake of just telling the story; she makes them represent some idea, concept, or belief. She wraps her political and social views and opinions around each of her characters and even the minor characters are not spared. Honestly, I must say she has achieved a lot by using the happenings of the time in telling her story, just like in Half of A Yellow Sun, which is based on the Nigerian Civil War between 1967 and 1970. Her books will pry your eyes open clearly.
