📍Maiduguri, Nigeria

Let’s talk money in Maiduguri. Everyone keeps asking, "How much do you actually need to live here?" So here’s my honest breakdown from someone renting in Jajeri and buying market food at Monday Market.

Rent is the big one. In areas like Jajeri, Old GRA, or new layouts near the University, a one-bedroom self-contained runs about NGN 250,000 to NGN 400,000 per year. If you go to more crowded neighborhoods like Bulunkutu or Pompari, you can find a single room for NGN 100,000 to NGN 150,000 yearly. But don’t forget the agent fee - usually one month’s rent extra.

Food is where you feel the pinch. A bag of rice (50kg) at Monday Market or the grain market near Post Office costs NGN 40,000 to NGN 50,000 now. Tomatoes and pepper from vendors along Damboa Road often double in price during the dry season. I buy fresh vegetables from the women selling right by the Borno Express junction - cheaper than the big supermarkets. For meat, a kilo of beef from the abattoir area off Baga Road is about NGN 2,500.

Transport is manageable if you know the routes. A bike from Jajeri to the terminus near Gamboru market is NGN 100. A shared taxi from Railway to the University goes for NGN 200. If you live near Mairi, expect to pay a bit more because it’s farther from the hub.

Electricity is unpredictable. Most of us rely on rechargeable lamps and inverter systems. Some neighbors in Old GRA run generators on fuel, but fuel at the pumps near Airport Road sells for NGN 600 per litre now. You have to budget at least NGN 10,000 monthly for light and charging phones.

Healthcare is not cheap either. The general hospital on Lagos Street is cheaper but busy. For private clinics, like those off Damboa Road, a simple consultation can cost NGN 5,000 to NGN 10,000. I save the government hospital for emergencies only.

So final honest answer: a single person living modestly in Jajeri or Mairi needs about NGN 150,000 to NGN 200,000 per month to eat, move around, and stay housed. Families need double that easily. It’s not impossible, but you have to know where to spend and where to save.

Share your own breakdown too - where in Maiduguri do you live and what are you paying? Let’s help each other out.
