Roll Out the Drums
Roll out the drums!
Loud, clear, as they pitch;
The African music-makers!
Glee! as they sound.
Glean from their sound.
A roll call of their sort,
Sought after in kingly courts.
Drums of merry and melody;
Messengers of peace,
Ensuing percussionists’ pieces,
In Yoruba land.
Where’s gone the bàtá?
The cynosure of auditory flexes;
Fitful for the dancing shoes.
Sweet as it sounds,
Dùndún resonates with caramel;
Unleashes festivity as the new yam.
Hear, gángan! Here, gángan!
The very occasions’ master,
Talking as it musters.
Princes race to its sound;
Warriors’ wrestles cease when it sounds.
That’s àgídìgbo, the acoustic delight!
Omele, the merry maker!
Its sticks ooze harmonious beats;
Beats that stick to happy feet.
Roll out the drums!
Lean to hear their sound;
Learn as they sound.
The African music-makers!
