A DAY AFTER TOMORROW

Behind a thousand suns sat the future
- a teenage girl too shy to say hi;
Enshrouded in hijab and doctrines;
a chaste virgin,
too celibate to bear a child
So she sat in the sombre of piety
too devout to honour dates;
A no respecter of time and seasons,
some died in the process of keeping wait

...so much to expect from this fifteen year old tattooed in henna
Too engrossed with beads,
yet can't take the hits
when life puts up a scowl and cringes sterner

So like a wisp shaken in the wind,
and like a whiff
fading in the open skies,
our grasp of the future was failing;
Our palms clutching the breeze,
doubts painting our tomorrow on the
canvas of falsehood;
A lucid epilogue on the backpages
of mystics written by the brotherhood

But I believe in the future,
even though my past and present play this "game of chase"
so Nemesis can catch up with us;
Even though karma vengefuly seeks our doom;
a mob putting on black uniforms

So until I'm called up from this realm,
I will revel in this
right hand that has indeed held some power;
in these chalked lips that has also blown some powder;
in this mind that's converted mere letters into magic;
The vague to vogue,
a tragedy finally ending up a classic

Until that day,
when I'll be bold enough to speak of
my fears
When my lips would not be too shy
and my eyes too overprotective
so as to hold back her tears
When the applauses and cheers would finally mean something to me;
A day when my smile would not be feigned when
congratulated by members of my own family
