A WALK THROUGH THE RUBBLE

Memory lane is a broken street stained with graffiti;
the shadow of a once buzzing city
Walls still bearing on them the portraits of young love;
A pile of bricks well made up
- brush strokes and blushes smeared all over her cheeks;
The white of paint beautifully colouring her teeth,
grinning with so much zest her burning eyes could pop out of passion
...but of course,
that was before the shells took a hit;
before it
blew our feelings way out of proportion:

Before our worlds fell apart,
and its fences gave way to debris;
before it bowed at the outstretched scepter of ruin;
before it took the knee at the throne of whatsoever sat therein

So I once again walked on what used to be called a pavement,
boulevards flanking either side
The highway to love now belted with caution tapes,
the very spot where our feelings did die:
Patches of concrete dotted with bullet holes,
corpses on the very scene of the crime
Yet we stood, lonesome ghosts beside our bodies,
watching a million and one journalists lie:

"...This, right here, is the very spot of the unfortunate incident that occurred 4 hours ago.
As you can see, the situation has been effectively taken care of by the various agencies and departments of the Federal Agency for Disaster Management and Control, in collaboration with the State Security Service.
Members of the public are hereby advised to go about their normal businesses without fear, as normalcy has been sufficiently restored.

Marie Hackett, reporting..."
