I wish I can weave you a happy poem, so I can achieve a new quest
As I relish and reminisce a happy childhood that didn't last for long
But I know I have to write something happy, for the sake of this contest
But I'm sorry to say most of my happy memories are now in the mud
As I watch Ajike walk down the aisle, grinning from ear to ear
How time flies, oh yes, it's the day of her matrimony
I reminisce the days of our childhood days as tho it is here
As I watch her mum praying her daughter will never have to use the word alimony
I reminisce old times
As soon as we hear the morning crow, we walk with the women as they happily go get h water from the stream,
Not forgetting to bid goodbyes to our fathers and brothers as they'd head to the farm
On our return, the girls clean the house as our mothers head to the kitchen, we afterwards all head to the farm as we fill our calabash with food to the brim
In the evening, we play hide and seek around our mud house
Afterwards we listened to folklores from our fathers at night
And at noon the next day, we adorn ourselves with beautifully painted cowries
As we showcase our beauties to the world under the blazing sunlight
As these are our daily routines, until it all became sour
I vividly recall the most beautiful memories we all created around the big baobab tree in the corner of the village square as we played husbands and wives
As we all grew up and things began to go ashore
We all realised that life can be queer despite how much we thrive
But here we are, as I smile happily at the memories and present
I didn't realise I'm the one that caught the bouquet
I grinned as I realised, tho most of my days were sad, but no day I ever resent
As I smile with new hope that I will be okay
Cause better are the days ahead we await
As I reminisce my memories, I realised I've lived a life with Faith
What inspired this poem, is my memories, life has been filled with ups and down, how we've been struggling till now, with hope of better days. I hope this poem inspires other
