THE SINGING BONE

There lived a man called TAKURUKU, he was the wealthiest farmer in a village known as ABAKPA. He married four wives and he was blessed with many children.

One day, TAKURUKU and his beloved son NYAMAZINGA went to the farm in the month of September when the rain was usually heavy to make heaps in preparation for the next yam planting season. There were only two roads which linked to Takuruku's farm. One was long and free from evil while the other short but characterized by evils. No one tread the short road in the hot afternoon usually between 12:00 O' Clock and 3:00 O' Clock because many people who followed the path were reportedly missing without being found.

On reaching to the farm,TAKURUKU and his son began making heaps without delay. Suddenly, NYAMAZINGA removed a strange human bone in the ground which looked like a flute. He quickly ran toward his father calling, "Baba! baba!" The father asked, "what is it, son?" He showed it to his father and the father examined it carefully then said, "it's a flute used by our ancestors. We were told that whoever finds it is blessed" The father asked him to blow it and when it was blown it started singing: "Blessed is he who picks the extraordinary flute, he shall remain blessed forever..." It was a beautiful song indeed .Both of them like the song and were excited. So, NYAMAZINGA kept the bone on the biggest heap so that he could remember to carry it home.

After working for two to three hours, they were tired and left for home. However, unfortunately, NYAMAZINGA forgot to carry his flute where he kept it. It was when they arrived home that it occurred to him that he had forgotten to carry his flute so he pleaded with his parent to allow him to go and Carry it but they refused. He cried so much but his father stood his ground that his son must not go there.

However, NYAMAZINGA sneaked and went to the farm to carry his beautiful flute. On his way going, he followed the long path which was free from evil. He found his flute where it was kept. But before he could come back home, it was already six o' Clock in the evening so he decided to follow the short path. As he was going home, he met with a human THIGH walking toward him. He screamed and began trembling with fear. The human THIGH asked him with a horrific voice, "who are you? And where are you coming from?" The boy knelt down trembling and begging to be forgiven. However, the boy replied, "I found this flute while working with my father on the farm but I forgot to carry it home so I went and picked it".Then, the thigh said, "blow it let me hear". When the boy blew the flute it began singing and the thigh was amazed at the beautiful song so it spared the boy's life. NYAMAZINGA heaved a sigh of relief then continued running back home.

All of a sudden, he saw a human head with big eyes rolling toward him. He felt like flying but there was nothing he could do. Then, the head asked, "who are you? What are you doing here at this hour?" The boy's lips were quivering while he tried to utter some words. He begged and narrated his story. "Blow the flute let me hear", ordered the head. When the bone was blown, it sang as before and the head was fascinated by the song so it had pity on the boy. It ordered him to run quickly and leave the place.

However, he could not go farther away when he saw human chest rolling toward him. This time, he stood in fear staring at it. When it drew near, it asked, "small boy, what are you doing here? Don't you know that this road is not for humans?" The boy's teeth were chattering as he opened his mouth to talk. He became more terrified when he heard that the road wasn't for humans. It recalled to him that what his parents told him was true. He managed and narrated his story amidst tears. The chest ordered him to blow the flute and he did so. The flute sang again when it was blown meanwhile the chest was impressed by the beautiful song so it allowed him to go. It ordered him to run quickly without looking back. He ran as he had never run before and arrived home safely. On reaching home, he met with his parent, siblings and relatives crying that he would not be back again. But on sighting him coming back, everyone was surprised so they ran to welcome him. They asked him how he managed to take the flute and come back home safely. He narrated his story and the whole village was thrown into jubilation.
