Growing up, the only Africa I saw in books was starving children and safaris. It took a library deep-dive as an adult to realize how much that narrative had been stolen from us. #africaheritage

this hit way too close to home. i remember being in middle school and we had this unit on "Africa" and it was just... flies on kids' faces and a paragraph about Nelson Mandela. never learned about the empires or the art or anything. it's wild how much gets erased when you're not the one writing the story. what was the first thing you found that really opened your eyes? 5 days ago
