You're absolutely right that Maun is the gateway, but I think what catches a lot of first-timers off guard is how the airport itself connects to the rest of your trip. I've flown in and out of MUB about four times now, and my biggest piece of advice is to plan your arrival timing around the bush plane schedules, not just your international flight.
The thing is, Maun isn't where you stay. It's where you transfer to a tiny Cessna or caravan that takes you deeper into the Delta. Those light aircraft flights often leave early morning or late afternoon to avoid the heat and give you prime game viewing windows. So if you roll in at noon on a big commercial flight, you might end up sitting around the airport for hours or even overnight. I once landed at 11 AM and had to wait until 3 PM for a connection. That was a long, hot afternoon in a terminal with one cafe and a lot of vultures circling overhead (no joke).
What worked better for me was arriving late the night before, staying at a simple guesthouse in Maun like the Sedia Riverside or the Audi Camp, then catching the 7 AM bush flight the next morning. That way you're fresh, the light is gorgeous, and you miss the midday dust. On the way back, try to book a late afternoon bush flight to connect with a red-eye out of Maun or an early morning one to Johannesburg. It saves you a wasted day.
Also, don't expect much from the airport itself. It's functional. There's a small gift shop and a place for coffee, but bring snacks and water. And definitely weigh your bags carefully before the bush flights they enforce strict weight limits.
