You know, the solar talk is real and it’s saving a lot of us. But the thing nobody mentions enough is how we’ve had to completely rewire our daily schedules. I live in Lagos, and I’ve stopped thinking of my day in 24-hour blocks. I now operate on a "power window" calendar. I know which hours the grid is most reliable in my area (usually late nights between 11pm and 3am), so I plan all my heavy internet tasks for then. Downloading work files, uploading videos, even running my small e-commerce orders. It took a while to get used to sleeping in two shifts, but it works.

For fuel prices, I switched my commuting entirely. I sold my car and bought a reliable power bank for my phone and a used electric scooter that I charge at night. It cost me about a month’s worth of fuel money upfront, but now I don’t even think about petrol queues. For groceries, I go to local markets at 6am on Saturdays before the fuel-dependent delivery trucks arrive. Prices are 20-30% lower because they haven’t factored in transport surcharges yet.

Internet cost is a killer. I’ve stopped using mobile data for streaming or browsing. I bought a cheap MiFi with a data-only plan from a secondary ISP that runs on a different network. I switch between the two depending on which one is faster at the moment. And honestly, I’ve rediscovered physical books and board games with my neighbors. We have a rotating library now. It’s cheaper and way more social than Netflix.
