You know, I’ve seen a lot of talk about solar and generators, and those are solid. But one thing that’s been a game changer for me is how I’ve restructured my work and daily movement to match the power and fuel reality. Fuel prices have made driving a luxury I can’t afford daily, so I switched to a hybrid schedule: I do two days in the office, three days remote, and on those office days I carpool with a neighbor who works near me. We split fuel costs 50-50, and it cuts my monthly spending by about 40 percent.
Internet costs are another beast. I used to pay for a big data plan from one provider, but now I have two smaller SIM cards from different networks. When one network is slow or expensive, I switch to the other. I also downloaded offline maps and use messaging apps that compress data, like WhatsApp’s low-data mode. For outages, I’ve got a power bank that I charge at work or at a friend’s house with a generator. It’s not perfect, but it keeps my phone alive for essential calls and payments.
What nobody talks about is the mental adjustment. I’ve learned to plan my day in blocks: morning for tasks that need internet, afternoon for offline work like reading or sorting files, and evening for family time by candlelight. It’s forced a slower pace, but honestly, I sleep better now. I’m not chasing the grid or fuel queues anymore. It’s about working with what we have, not fighting it.
