The Yobe community and Islamic scholars have lauded Governor Mai Mala Buni, CON, COMN, for elevating the state’s HISBA to a commission status, making Yobe the first state in Nigeria to do so.

Unlike other states where HISBA operates as a board with limited powers, Yobe’s HISBA Commission has been granted full authority to regulate, enforce, and implement religious and moral directives. Analysts note that while boards are often restricted to advisory and supervisory roles, commissions possess executive powers, including the ability to make and enforce regulations.

Governor Buni’s decision, observers say, reflects his administration’s commitment to strengthening religious institutions and tackling moral decadence in society.

Speaking on the development, Sheikh Abdallah Mahmud Adam Potiskum commended the governor for prioritizing religious affairs.

“We must commend Governor Mai Mala Buni for establishing HISBA as a commission—the first in Nigeria. By granting full authority, the Yobe State government has empowered us to carry out our duties without interference or dependence on any other authority,” Sheikh Abdallah stated.

The establishment of the HISBA Commission is being widely celebrated across the state as a bold step that positions Yobe as a model for other states in institutionalizing religious oversight.
