YES, I AM A MAN
By Ineke BSC
Yes, I am a man, (pause)
Made to bear my pain.
My tears [forbidden],
Hidden from the skies.
I weep in silence (longer pause)
Where no mercy lies,
And let the rainfall
Wash my veins again.
You [broke my spirit],
Yet forbade my cry.
You burned the bridge
That once held us near.
You smiled through falsehood,
Clothed your scorn in cheer,
And left my soul
To question every lie.
You crave my labor,
But you never see.
You take, entitled,
As though I must give.
You [drain my lifeblood] (raise voice slightly)
So that you may live,
Yet blind you remain
To the heart in me.
Is love not [healing]? (pause)
Is it not to mend?
Like rivers flowing
With a gentle grace,
Soothing our hearts
In twilight’s embrace...
Yet you wound me deep,
And mock love’s end.
You called it love,
But left me torn inside.
A trust once whole
Now shattered on the floor.
(softly, slower pace)
Still, in my spirit,
Something yearns for more:
A truth so pure
No cruelty can hide.
