Yeah I think the apps are still working for some people, but it's definitely changed. I'm 28 and I've been on and off Hinge and Bumble for the last year. The matches are there, but the quality of conversation has tanked. People are burned out. I found myself going on dates where neither of us really wanted to be there, just going through the motions.

What actually worked for me was something kind of in between. I started going to events that were specifically advertised as "offline" or "no phones allowed." There's a board game cafe near me that does singles nights where you leave your phone in a locker. You actually have to talk to people. And the thing is, once you've spent an hour playing a terrible round of Codenames with someone, you already know if you have chemistry. Way better than swiping.

I also tried something simpler. I just started saying yes to everything. Friend's house party? Go. Work happy hour? Stay. Random trivia night? Join a team solo. You meet friends of friends that way, and those connections are way more natural. My current serious relationship came from a camping trip where I was the plus one of a coworker. We were stuck together because of a flat tire, and we talked for six hours. No algorithm beats that.

I think the real shift in 2026 is that people are realizing apps are a tool, not a solution. They work for casting a wide net, but the real catches happen when you put the phone down and actually exist in the same space as other people.

The board game cafe thing is genius honestly. I've been on Hinge for like 2 years and the burnout is SO real. I swear every conversation starts with "how's your week going" and I just can't anymore lol. Might have to look for something like that near me, the idea of actually laughing with someone instead of small talk sounds nice
