Pregnancy is a life-changing journey for every woman , filled with its own unique set of challenges and joys. For many, the experience is heavily influenced by their environment and the support system around them. A Nigerian living in Canada shares the contrasting experiences during her first pregnancy in Nigeria and her second pregnancy in Canada
During her first pregnancy, she experienced severe morning sickness, known as hyperemesis gravidarum. This condition made it extremely difficult for her to perform daily activities, including cooking. Fortunately, she had an incredible support system. Her sister moved in with her for three months, taking over household chores and cooking. Her aunt also played a significant role by preparing home-cooked meals, ensuring she was well-nourished despite her inability to cook.
The second pregnancy brought new challenges as she was now living in Canada with a toddler. Both she and her husband were working, and managing a toddler while dealing with pregnancy-related sickness was overwhelming. Unlike in Nigeria, where she had family support, in Canada, she had to rely more on friends and church members. Despite the initial difficulties, she received unexpected support from her new community. Friends sent meals, neighbors offered baby clothes, and church members helped whenever possible.
She found that despite the lack of immediate family support, small acts of kindness from friends and neighbors made a significant difference. These gestures, such as receiving home-cooked meals or baby clothes, provided comfort and relief during tough times.
Throughout her journey, she remained grateful for the support she received and emphasized the role of faith in navigating the challenges. She encouraged others in similar situations to focus on the blessings, no matter how small, and to rely on their faith and community for strength.
Her message to other pregnant women, especially those living abroad, is to actively seek out and engage with their communities. She advised reaching out to friends, both old and new, and being open about their needs. By doing so, they can find the support necessary to manage the difficulties of pregnancy.
