Why Are Teachers Paid So Poorly?

I thought poor teachers salaries & remuneration was unique to Nigeria but it seems not. Nigerian teachers teaching in some private schools are not even paid a living wage. Some earn less than N20,000 ( less than the now disputed minimum wage)

But, school owners and parents expect teachers to put in their best

Is it really possible for a teacher to put in their best when they cannot afford basic necessities like food, clothing, transportation and other responsibilities monthly?
