Long before bustling Port Louis became the island’s capital, the earliest footprints of settlement in Mauritius began at Vieux Grand Port, located on the southeastern coast. This historic site is the birthplace of European colonization on the island—first by the Dutch in the 17th century and later by the French. Today, it stands as a captivating archaeological zone where the layers of Mauritian history are literally carved into the stone.

In 1638, the Dutch established Fort Frederik Hendrik here, their first stronghold in Mauritius. Though eventually abandoned, its remains—including stone foundations, walls, and wells—tell tales of survival, struggle, and early colonial ambition. The French later revived the area in the 18th century before relocating the capital to Port Louis.

The Frederik Hendrik Museum, located within the site, presents a fascinating collection of artifacts unearthed from local excavations: cannonballs, pottery, tools, and early maps that trace the region’s evolution from a strategic colonial outpost to a sleepy fishing village. Walking the grounds today, visitors can still sense the echoes of the past beneath the banyan trees and among the coral-stone ruins.

📌 Visitor Tips:

Ideal to visit in the morning or late afternoon to avoid heat and enjoy soft coastal light.

Wear walking shoes—the site is grassy and uneven in parts.

Don’t miss the museum; it provides the necessary context to appreciate what you're seeing.

Bring water, sunblock, and a camera—scenic views of the bay and historical backdrops await.

Respect the ruins: climbing or leaning on them is discouraged to preserve their fragile state.

Vieux Grand Port isn’t just a historical site—it’s the cradle of modern Mauritius. A place where the island’s layered story truly began, offering a peaceful, poignant connection to its colonial roots.
