UNREQUITED GARDENS

I don’t know about you,
but I find it sickening.
the way we pour ourselves
into gardens that don’t bloom for us.
We remember every moment,
the details of their lives,
while ours blur in their minds,
barely an afterthought.
We give them our care,
our unfiltered attention,
but do they notice?
We strive to make them
feel heard,
valued, seen.
But maybe it’s not their fault.
Their hearts are simply set
on others—
others who are not us.
They might sense we care,
but that’s where it stops.
And so each day,
we wonder when this
ache will end.
Some days, we wish to wake
to a heart that no longer feels
this weight.
On rare days, we wish
they’d finally see us anew,
as we see them.
But does that ever happen?
Is letting go as easy
as breathing out a sigh?
Is it truly simple
to silence the heart,
to erase thoughts
of those who see us
only as shadows?
If it were easy,
it wouldn’t come with this pain.
So, we console ourselves
with hopes of someone better.
But does “better” even exist?
Is that really what we seek—
or simply a way to dull the ache,
to quiet a heart that keeps beating,
to shield it from breaking once more?
If only it were simple.
If it were.
everyone would do it,
wouldn’t they?
