Gberefu Island, located in the coastal town of Badagry in Lagos State, Nigeria, is known as the Point of No Return. This island near the border with Benin Republic serves as a stark reminder of the Transatlantic Slave Trade, which began in 1473. It's where many enslaved Africans last stood on African soil before being shipped to the Caribbean, Americas, and Europe.

The journey to Gberefu Island starts with a boat ride from Badagry Marina, following the same path taken by slaves. On the island, tourists can walk the original slave route, which includes:

- An attenuation well, believed to have been used to erase the memories of the enslaved.
- The path leading to the actual Point of No Return, marked by two poles slanted towards each other facing the Atlantic Ocean.

Guided tours offer deep insights into the history and impact of the slave trade. The island is under the governance of two chiefs, adding cultural depth to the visit. Although preservation could be improved, the untouched nature of the site adds to the authenticity of the experience.

For tourists:

- A boat ride is needed to reach the island, and costs can be negotiated.
- Walking the route is part of the experience, though motorcycles are available for those needing assistance.
- Bring sunscreen, water, and comfortable walking shoes as there are no amenities on the island.
- Visit during cooler parts of the day, and plan for a half-day trip.
- Prepare emotionally for the impact of the visit.
- Be respectful with photography due to the site's solemn nature.

Currently, tourism infrastructure is minimal, but there's room for development that could enhance both preservation and education without losing the site's profound significance.
