TRICKED BY AN IMP

It's been over a decade, yet when I looked back to those days, I could not help thinking that childhood was the best stage in human life; no complicated thoughts or desires, it was all about innocence.

I could not help laughing whenever I remembered some of those funny moments. There was one I really found intriguing so I named it "TRICKED BY AN IMP"

My family lived in one of the bustling areas in Ibadan. Day and night were only distinguished by darkness or sunlight, other than that, people were always on the move till midnight.

It was quite a peaceful world, at least, parents did not need to worry about kidnappers or traffickers before sending their kids out. As long as he/she could walk, any child could be sent on errands regardless of their age.

There was a woman selling Akara down the street. Her Akara balls were so amazing that you could smell it from miles away. Eating alone will make you feel like you are in paradise.

My little friend Kuburah, and I were sent to buy Akara by our mothers, so we decided to go together. Two five year old girls walked and played as we went there.

Soon we got to the woman shop, it was filled with a crowd of adults trying to get their own Akara, some of them pushed one another or shouted, in short the scene was quite chaotic.

Kuburah and I stared at each other in dismay, wondering how we would squeeze among these people without getting squashed.

Waiting was definitely not an option because the crowd kept increasing, so the Akara might finish by the time the crowd disperses.

We were still thinking of what to do when someone suddenly shouted "ole (thief)...ole, they have come o" The voice was so loud that I became frightened and ran away without looking back.

Remember I said earlier that back then it was quite peaceful, but it does not mean that there were no neighborhood fights or robbery. So when the person screamed, I did not bother to check and I fled. The little me thought that the robbers must have come again, so I ran away like my life depended on it.

Finally, I found a dark corner and hid, my heart pounded hard and I shivered in fright. I looked around but there was no one in sight. Then I realized that my friend was no longer around, probably she also hid somewhere.

I stood fearfully in the corner hoping that those "robbers" would not see me. However I suddenly felt a thin hand holding my little waist.

My heart skipped a bit and I stood frozen, I really thought that one of those people discovered me until... "my wife" a childish voice called out.

It was a voice I would recognise even in my dreams. The person was Michael, he was two years older than me but was very mischievous, I never liked him but took liberty in teasing and annoying me.

Every time he saw me, he would call me his wife which would instantly ignite my anger. I would report him to my mom or hit him with whatever I found, the boy on the other hand, would laugh like an idiot and further irritated me.

When I heard his voice, I instantly became irritated. I forgot my fear of the "robbers" and pushed him away, then ran out. When I got out, I remembered why I hid in the first place, but looking at the bustling street, I saw that everything was normal, there was no sign of robbery at all.

Kuburah ran to me at that moment and said that she had been looking for me. She said that there was no robbery at all. It was Michael prank, she already saw it was him but before she could say anything, I fled faster than a rabbit…
