Tokyo is the only city that is louder in silence than most cities are in noise.

Shibuya crossing at midnight. Thousands of people moving in every direction and somehow nobody touches. It is choreography without a choreographer. A city that runs on invisible rules everyone follows and nobody had to be taught.

The contrast is what gets you. A 300-year-old temple next to a glass skyscraper. A ramen shop with three seats that has been open since your grandparents were born next to a vending machine selling hot coffee at 2 AM.

I ate the best meal of my life in a basement. Seven courses. One chef. No English menu. I pointed at things and trusted the process. Every dish was a sentence in a language I did not speak but understood perfectly.

Travel tip: get a Suica card day one. Learn three phrases. Bow slightly when you say thank you. And eat at the places with no signs. The best food in Tokyo is hiding.

the part about the basement meal without an english menu hit me hard. i had a similar thing in a tiny place in osaka - just pointed at what the guy next to me was eating and ended up with this insane grilled fish i still think about years later. that trust thing is real, you just have to let go lol
