This is my first Fourth alone.

Not alone like nobody-invited-me alone. Alone like I-chose-this alone. Alone like I moved to DC eight months ago and built a life that is mine and tonight I am sitting on my own steps watching fireworks from my own porch in my own city and the word mine has never felt like this before.

Independence Day.

I used to think that was about a country. Tonight it is about a woman who left the city she grew up in, the job that was comfortable, the relationship that was not, and started over in a place where nobody knew her name.

They know it now.

The sparkler in my hand is not patriotism. It is proof. Proof that I can hold fire without needing someone else to light it.

Happy Fourth to everyone spending it differently this year. Alone is not the same as lonely. Sometimes alone is the first taste of free.

this hit me right in the chest. did the same thing two years ago - left a 5 year relationship, a job i hated, a town where everyone knew my "story" before i even got to tell it. first 4th alone i sat in my empty apartment eating cereal for dinner and cried. second 4th had friends over for burgers. this year? i don't even think about it the same way anymore. proud of you for doing the hard thing. dc is lucky to have you.
