I attended IATF 2025 today — but guess what?
I got in as one of the photographers for the event.
At about 8:00 AM this morning, I got a call. I was still fast asleep, having worked overnight, and my lectures weren’t until 2:00 PM — so I thought I had a slow morning ahead. But the call was urgent:
“There’s a conference happening at 9:00 AM. Can you photograph it?”
Still half-asleep, I said yes — with a note that I’d need to leave before 2 PM for school. No further briefing. Just the word: conference.
Thankfully, I’ve worked on several corporate events, and I maintain a consistent style. My wears are always cleaned and ready over the weekend, so within minutes, I picked out an outfit and was on the move.
Now here’s where it gets interesting — two key moments stood out for me today:
1. The Bolt Driver Pitch
On my way, my Bolt driver struck up a conversation — curious if I could help him land a job. He even offered to send me his CV. Perhaps it was the way I was dressed — I looked the part.
In my head, I laughed:
"I'm just a 200-level student of UNILAG o!" 😂
But I didn’t brush him off. I handed him my business card and we spoke. I offered some guidance and encouragement.
Why? Because I’ve learned not to underestimate anyone. Some of the most rewarding connections I’ve made came from the most unexpected places.
He left feeling hopeful — and I genuinely believe he’ll get that job.
2. The Mistaken VIP
When I arrived at the venue, the female protocol officers immediately began ushering me in — seemingly to the front rows 😅.
I gently stepped aside with a smile, saying I wanted to “catch up with colleagues” — not wanting to burst their bubble that I was just one of the photographers for the day 😂.
During the event, I noticed something:
Despite not being the official photographer, many delegates paid special attention to me — offering more access, greater recognition.
Why? I believe it was in the way I carried myself — in appearance, body language, and professionalism.
So, what’s the point of this story?
Getting an impromptu call and moving swiftly shows readiness and planning.
Being able to advise and encourage someone like my driver shows versatility, empathy, and value.
Navigating perception and situations shows improvisation and emotional intelligence.
Gaining preference in a room of elites shows presence, communication skills, and great personal branding.
These are layers of value I believe everyone should nurture to thrive and navigate today’s world.
