The Women Before Me

Before me,
there were women.
Women who woke up early
and slept late.
Women who knelt in the dark
with nothing but hope
and the names of their children
on their lips.
Women who carried families
on their backs
and still found a way
to laugh.
My mother.
My grandmother.
Women whose names
may never be written in books
yet their strength
built the ground I stand on.
They walked through storms
so I could see clearer skies.
They endured nights
so my mornings
could be brighter.
Their sacrifices
became my opportunities.
Their prayers
became my covering.
I stand not alone.
I stand
on the shoulders
of women
who refused to give up.
And because of them
I know this truth:
The strength of a woman
does not begin with me.
It lives
in the women
who came before me.
