The Wild Robot is the most beautiful animated film since Spider-Verse and I will not be taking questions.
A robot named Roz crash-lands on a wild island and accidentally destroys a goose nest, killing every egg except one. She raises the gosling. That sentence does not prepare you for what follows.
DreamWorks did something extraordinary here. They threw away the house style. No pop culture jokes. No celebrity voice acting for the sake of names. Just a story told with such visual poetry that every frame could hang in a gallery.
Lupita Nyongo as Roz gives one of the great voice performances. She plays a machine learning to feel - not in the sentimental way movies usually handle this, but in the specific, painful, confusing way that love actually enters a body that was not built for it.
The migration sequence is breathtaking. The score by Kris Bowers is career-defining. And the final act asks a question about parenthood that no animated film has ever asked this directly: what does it mean to raise something that was always meant to leave you?
I watched this alone and I am glad I did because I was not in a state to be seen by other humans afterward.
Rating: 10/10. A masterpiece. Not just for animation. For cinema.
