The town trail is a real gem if you take the time to actually stop and talk to people along the way. I did it last winter and the colonial architecture is beautiful, but the best part was an elderly man sitting on a bench outside the old courthouse. He pointed out which buildings were used as barracks in the 1890s and where the first post office stood. The official trail map is fine, but I'd suggest grabbing a coffee at the Lobatse Bakery first and asking the staff if any local events are happening. Sometimes the trail overlaps with market days or community gatherings that aren't on any brochures.
One thing I learned the hard way wear good walking shoes. The paths around the older parts of town can be uneven and dusty, especially after rain. Also, bring water and a hat. There's not much shade on the main stretches, and the sun can be surprisingly strong even in winter.
If you want a deeper experience, try the detour to the old railway station. It's a short walk off the main route and you can still see the original platform. Watch for the plaque near the ticket window it's easy to miss but it explains how Lobatse was a key stop for traders heading north.
Overall, the trail is perfect for a slow afternoon. Don't rush it. Let the town show you its layers.
