THE TEACHER
Episode 1: September
Chiamaka applied to forty-three jobs after her NYSC year. She got one offer. SS2 English at Government Secondary School, Ajegunle.
Her mother cried. Not with pride. With the particular grief of a woman who spent her savings on a university degree so her daughter would not end up teaching in the kind of school she herself had attended.
"It is temporary," Chiamaka said.
She arrived on a Monday in September. The school looked like a building that had given up on itself. Paint peeling like sunburnt skin. Windows missing louvers. A staff room with four chairs for eleven teachers.
Her class had thirty-two students. Thirty-one showed up. The thirty-second, she would later learn, was in juvenile detention for stealing a generator, which he said he needed to charge his phone so he could study at night because his house had no light.
The first thing she said was: "My name is Miss Okafor. I am here to teach you English."
A boy in the second row said: "The last English teacher lasted three weeks."
"What happened?"
"Bayo happened."
She looked at the back of the room. A boy sat with his arms crossed, feet on the desk, wearing the expression of someone who had already decided that this teacher, like the others, would not survive him.
"Bayo," Chiamaka said. "Feet off the desk, please."
Bayo did not move.
Thirty students watched. The silence had teeth.
Chiamaka pulled a chair to the front of the room, sat down directly in front of Bayo's desk, and opened her copy of Things Fall Apart.
"Chapter one," she said. "Okonkwo was well known throughout the nine villages and even beyond." She looked at Bayo. "You can keep your feet on the desk. But you will listen. Because this story is about a man who was so afraid of being weak that he destroyed everything he loved. And I think you know something about that."
Bayo's feet came off the desk.
Not immediately. Not dramatically. Slowly. The way things move when they are moving for real.
Episode 2 drops tomorrow.
