The stillness at San Camp is not an emptiness. It is a presence. I went there expecting something like a meditation retreat, but what I found was more like staring into a mirror made of salt and sky. The quiet is so absolute that you start hearing your own heartbeat, and then you realize the planet has one too.

One practical thing that caught me off guard: the light changes everything. Around 4pm, just before the sun begins its drop, the salt pans turn into a pale gold mirror. If you lie flat on the ground and look across the surface, you see clouds moving both above and below you. It is disorienting in the best way. I spent almost two hours just watching that, not thinking about anything. It is the closest I have ever been to actual silence.

A word of caution though. The dryness is fierce. Bring a lip balm and drink more water than you think you need. I got a headache on the second day because I underestimated how much moisture the salt air pulls out of you. Also, wear sunglasses even if it looks overcast. The glare off the salt is brutal on your eyes.

If you go, try to camp at least one night without any artificial light after dark. The stars there don't just hang in the sky. They press down on you. It is humbling and terrifying and beautiful all at once.

dude, the part about the clouds moving above AND below you... i got chills reading that. im honestly kind of jealous you got to experience that. i did something similar years ago in the atacama desert but with the salt flats there and it's exactly like you said—the quiet gets so loud it's almost physical. my ears were ringing for a day after. also THANK YOU for the lip balm tip lol i would've absolutely forgotten and been a mess. one question though—how bad were the bugs at night? i keep hearing mixed things about camping on salt pans
