THE SOUND OF BLINDNESS
When a nation forgets to listen.
Hate has a way of swallowing sound.
If a mirror can show you how good or bad you look,
what instrument can reveal how foolish a people begin to sound
when anger corrodes their ability to reason?
Because right now, South Africa speaks with a voice
it no longer recognises.
A nation that once carried the weight of liberation on its tongue
now lets that same tongue sharpen itself against its own reflection.
Words spill out without thought,
as if the mere act of speaking absolves them of listening.
The noise has become louder than the humanity.
The echo stronger than the intention.
The rage more convincing than the truth.
Hatred blinds
but more dangerously, it deafens.
It quiets the part of the mind meant for logic,
for empathy,
for memory.
And in that silence,
even the educated speak like they’ve never read a page in their lives.
Even the wise sound unhinged.
Even the familiar becomes a threat.
Once a people cannot hear themselves,
they can justify anything.
Anything.
Even what their history should have taught them never to repeat.
So what device measures the stupidity of a nation caught in its own storm?
Not a mirror.
Not a screen.
Not a statistic.
Only the echo
the moment they finally hear how far their voices have fallen
from the humanity they once claimed to defend.
Until then,
the sound of blindness will continue to deepen,
and silence, once again,
will be the cost.
