The mother of the groom danced like nobody was watching.

She was seventy-three. Her wrapper was tied tight. Her shoes were somewhere under a table because at some point in the evening she decided that rhythm and footwear were incompatible.

She danced highlife. She danced juju. She danced something that had no name but had a conviction that made the younger guests stop and stare and reconsider whether they had ever actually danced a day in their lives.

Her son watched from the side with his new wife. Both of them laughing so hard they had to hold each other up.

She was not celebrating a wedding. She was celebrating a victory. The boy she raised alone, the one she fed on a teacher's salary, the one she prayed over every night for thirty years, was happy.

And happy was worth dancing barefoot for.
