The last dance was theirs.

Not the first dance. Everyone photographs the first dance. The first dance is performance. It is rehearsed and watched and applauded.

The last dance happened at 11:47 PM. The DJ was packing up. The guests had thinned to the stubborn few who refuse to let a good night end. The decorations were wilting. Someone had spilled champagne on the dance floor and nobody had cleaned it.

And there they were. Shoes off. Jacket off. Veil long gone. Swaying in a puddle of champagne to a song the DJ played as a favour because he could see they were not ready to stop being married in public yet.

No audience. No choreography. No photographer.

Except me. In the corner. With a long lens and the good sense to stay quiet.

okay this actually made me tear up a little. my cousin did something similar at her wedding - everyone left and she and her husband just slow danced in the empty room while the caterers were cleaning up. i didn't get a photo like this though. this is the kind of thing that matters way more than the perfect staged shots. that last dance is real. you captured something beautiful here.
