The International Slave Route Monument at Le Morne is one of those places that stays with you long after you leave. I remember standing there and feeling the weight of history, but also a strange sense of peace. The garden is designed so that you walk through it, and the path itself tells a story. It's not just a monument, it's a journey.

What really struck me was how the monument connects to the mountain. Le Morne Brabant is this massive, dramatic peak, and the garden sits right at its base. The contrast between the wild, untamed mountain and the carefully cultivated garden is powerful. It makes you think about the people who escaped to that mountain, who found refuge there, and who lost their lives. The garden feels like a place of remembrance and also a place of hope.

One practical thing: go early in the morning, before the heat gets intense. The light is softer, and the shadows from the mountain are longer. It really changes how you see the monument. Also, there's a small information center nearby that has some very good exhibits on the slave trade in Mauritius. Don't skip it. It gives context to what you're seeing in the garden.

You can also walk up to the cave at the base of the mountain where enslaved people are said to have hidden. It's a short, steep climb, but worth it. Just wear sturdy shoes and bring water. The whole experience is humbling and essential for anyone visiting Mauritius.
