The Fourth in Atlanta is not a holiday. It is a family reunion that happens to fall on a holiday.
My grandmother starts cooking on July 2nd. Not because the food takes two days. Because the argument about what to cook takes one day and the cooking takes the next.
There are rules:
1. You bring something. Showing up empty-handed is a declaration of war.
2. The grill is Uncle Ray's. Do not look at the grill. Do not suggest propane. Do not ask about the temperature. Uncle Ray has been doing this since Carter was president.
3. The kids eat first. The adults wait. This is not negotiable.
4. Someone will bring store-bought potato salad. We will all pretend not to see it.
5. By 9 PM someone will cry. Not from sadness. From the feeling you get when everyone you love is in one yard and the sky is about to light up.
This is the Fourth. Not the one on TV. The real one. The one that smells like charcoal and sounds like your cousins and tastes like whatever Uncle Ray says is ready.
Happy Fourth from Atlanta. We saved you a plate.
