The flag on my neighbor's porch has been there since I moved in.
It is not new. It is faded and slightly frayed at one corner and it hangs year-round, not just on holidays. In rain. In snow. In the August heat that makes Nashville feel like the inside of a mouth.
I asked him once why he does not replace it.
He said the faded one is more honest. A brand new flag is a promise. A weathered one is proof.
Proof that it stayed.
Through the storms. Through the seasons. Through the years when loving this country felt like loving a person who keeps letting you down but who you cannot quite walk away from because the good parts are too good to abandon.
Happy Fourth.
Not to the shiny version of America. To the weathered one. The real one. The one that is still hanging.
