THE DRIVER
Episode 1: The Passenger
Femi had been driving Bolt for eleven months when the briefcase appeared.
It was a Tuesday. 11:47 PM. His last ride of the night. A man in a grey suit got in at Victoria Island and asked to go to Lekki Phase 1. He spoke on the phone the entire ride in a language Femi did not recognize. Not Yoruba. Not Igbo. Not French. Something else.
The man got out at a gate that opened before the car fully stopped, as if someone was watching. He paid cash. Triple the fare. He said nothing to Femi. Not thank you. Not goodnight. Nothing.
Femi drove two streets before he noticed the briefcase.
Black leather. Heavy. Two combination locks. And a sticker on the handle that read, in small red letters: DO NOT RETURN TO SENDER.
Femi pulled over. He stared at the briefcase in his mirror. Every instinct said open it. Every instinct also said do not.
His phone buzzed. A message from a number with no country code:
"You have 24 hours to deliver it. Instructions will follow. Do not contact the police. We know where your daughter goes to school."
Femi's hands gripped the steering wheel until his knuckles went white.
The rain kept falling. Lagos kept moving. And the briefcase sat in the back seat like a bomb that had not decided whether to go off.
Episode 2 drops tomorrow.
