The cockpit is the most organized room in the world.
Every switch has a purpose. Every dial tells a story. Every light means something specific and nothing is decorative. There is no clutter in a cockpit because clutter at 35,000 feet is not untidy. It is dangerous.
Pilots train for years to make the complex look simple. The calm voice during turbulence is not calm by nature. It is calm by training. Thousands of hours of training that turns panic into procedure.
That composure was built. It was practiced. It is one of the most impressive human skills that we take entirely for granted.

My dad was a pilot for 30 years and I never really got it until I sat jump seat on a flight once during some pretty nasty weather. He didn't even blink. Just calmly called out stuff to the other pilot like he was ordering coffee. Meanwhile I was white-knuckling the armrests lol. That "calm by training" line hit me hard. People really don't appreciate how much mental work goes into making that look easy. 9 days ago
