Christiansborg Castle, commonly known as Osu Castle, is one of Ghana’s most historically significant landmarks. Located along the coast in Accra’s Osu district, the castle has a complex past, having served multiple roles under different colonial powers. Originally built by the Danes in 1661 as a trading post, the castle changed hands between the Portuguese, the British, and the Swedes before finally being controlled by the British in the 19th century.

Unlike some of Ghana’s other coastal forts, Christiansborg Castle was not only a center for the transatlantic slave trade but also a seat of colonial administration. It functioned as the residence of Danish and later British governors before becoming Ghana’s seat of government after independence in 1957. The castle continued to serve as the official residence of Ghanaian presidents until 2013, making it a rare example of a historical slave fort that was later used for political leadership.

Today, the castle operates as a museum, offering visitors an in-depth look into Ghana’s colonial and political history. The guided tour takes visitors through the underground dungeons, grand halls, and official chambers where crucial decisions were made. Exhibits include historical artifacts, photographs, and documents detailing the castle’s transformation over the centuries.
