Brady Corbet made an epic about a Hungarian-Jewish architect who survives the war, emigrates to America, and spends the rest of his life trying to build something lasting in a country that wants his talent but not his personhood.

Adrien Brody's performance as Laszlo Toth is generational. He carries thirty years of displacement, addiction, genius, and grief in his body without ever telegraphing the work. You do not watch him act. You watch him live.

Felicity Jones as Erzsebet, his wife. Guy Pearce as Harrison Lee Van Buren, his patron and tormentor. The relationship between artist and patron has never been depicted with this much complexity and menace.

Shot in VistaVision. It looks like nothing else in cinema right now.

The film is about America. About what this country promises and what it extracts in payment.

Rating: 10/10. A monument.
