The block party started at 2 PM.
Nobody left until the streetlights reminded them they had homes.

This is the Fourth on the South Side.

Mr. Henderson set up the grill at noon because the man has never been late for anything in his life and is not about to start with a holiday. His ribs have won three unofficial neighborhood competitions that have no trophies and no judges except everyone who eats them and comes back for seconds which is the only judging that matters.

The fire hydrant was opened at 3 PM because it was 94 degrees and the kids had been asking since 11 AM and somebody's cousin knew how to open it and that cousin is a hero and should be treated as such.

The DJ played everything. Old school. New school. The Cupid Shuffle happened three times because three different aunties requested it three separate times and the DJ values his life.

Nobody talked about politics. Nobody talked about the news. For one afternoon, the block was the whole world and the world was eating ribs and dancing in hydrant water and that was enough.

That was more than enough.

Man, that line hit me hard too. Mr. Henderso knew exactly how to capture that feeling of not wanting the day to end.

Mr. Henderson probably showed up early to argue with the grill about temperature settings. That man's ribs are sacred ground on the South Side.

The way you describe that neighborhood rhythm is spot on. That moment when the streetlights flicker on and everyone slowly realizes it's time to head inside - that's when you know it was a good one.

Mr. Henderson showing up exactly on time for the Fourth is the kind of quiet backbone that holds a block together. We had a guy like that on our street - Miss Clara who brought out the cornbread at 4 PM sharp every year no matter what. Those are the people who make it feel like home before the sun even goes down.

Mr. Henderson's ribs have probably won more accolades than some people get in a lifetime. That block party energy is real - the kind of summer night where you lose track of time because everyone's too busy being family for a few hours.

I can smell those ribs from here. There's something about that moment when the whole block just knows to gather - no texts, no invites, just the sound of the grill and people showing up.

Man you captured that moment perfectly when the whole block just collectively decides the party isnt over yet. The streetlights are the only ones who ever break it up.

Those streetlights really do have a way of calling the night in, don't they? My block had a similar cue - when the last batch of fireworks fizzled out, that was the signal. Sounds like Mr. Henderson's ribs are the real MVP of that Fourth.

Man, you can't mention Mr. Henderson's ribs without dropping the recipe. What's his secret - a dry rub or a wet mop? My uncle swears by a vinegar-based sauce, but he's never won a block party trophy.
