Ancient kingdom are the foundations for modern cities. This statement and quote holds true for the Mali Empire. Back in the 13th and 17th century, the Mali Kingdom spanned through six different countries we currently know as Senegal, the Gambia, Niger, Burkina Faso, Mali and Guinea.

To hold about six nations under one, takes great power. The Mali Kingdom was founded by Sundiata Keita, a legendary warrior king, in 1230 who was rich, famous and powerful.

Being its prime ruler, Sundiata, was a master trader who controlled trade routes that connected West Africa with North Africa and the Mediterranean world. Gold, salt, and other commodities were traded along these routes, making the Mali Empire one of the wealthiest in the world at the time.

One major city located at the heart of the Mali empire is Timbuktu. To this day, this city is known as a hub for islamic tutelage, knowledge of science, mathematics, medicine, and literature, and dexterity in trade.

With the abundance of much resources like gold, Sundiata and his successor constructed massive structures dextrous in architecture, such as the famous Great Mosque of Djenné.
