The Algorithm Of Heaven's Media— Chapter Nine

Harmattan had started creeping into Ondo in its quiet way, settling on leaves, on rooftops, even on people’s skin. The cashew trees around the AFUED campus wore a thin layer of grey, as if someone had dusted them with chalk. The air was drier now, and in the evenings, the breeze carried that familiar cold that made you fold your arms without thinking.
Christian stood on the balcony of his hostel, resting his elbows on the low railing, watching the sun sink slowly behind the hills.
Two months.
He let that number sit in his mind. Two full months of not missing his Sync.
If Heaven kept streaks the way social media did, his would be glowing by now. There was no breaks. No snoozed notifications. No “I’ll do it later.” It's not that it had been smooth.
Some mornings, his body refused to cooperate. He would wake up feeling heavy, like sleep was still sitting inside his bones. On those days, his prayers were short, almost tired.
“Lord, thank You… I’m here,” he would say, eyes half closed.
There were nights too when he knelt beside his bed and didn’t even remember when sleep carried him away. One moment he was praying, the next moment he was waking up on the floor with his neck stiff and woke up to see his hostel mate, Kayode, laughing at him.
But the Sync always happened. Morning. Evening. Sometimes in between. That was what had changed everything.

That afternoon, after a long lecture on History of Education in Nigeria that felt like it would never end, Christian was packing his bag slowly, still trying to shake off the sleep hanging around his eyes, when a shadow fell across his desk.
